What do I do if my house is flooded?

If you have been involved in an unfortunate disaster of house flooding caused by falling water, failure in the home water system, ground water or any other cause you will need to take immediate measures to ensure that your house is safe for you and your family. Here are a list of practices you will need to employ within 24 hours when your house is flooded.

Look out for additional risks

If you had to leave our home due to the flood, upon returning you must ensure that there are no loopholes or risks that may require you to evacuate your home again. Look out for visible structural damage, cracks and holes in the flooring or on the walls. You may want to contact your utility companies for through investigation in particular your gas supplier.

Your health comes first

Even if the water seems clean, there is a risk that the water is contaminated by sewage or by other household chemicals that can be harmful for you or your family. You must ensure that you are wearing safety equipment if you are to come in contact with the water. This includes; rubber gloves, knee high water proof boots and do not eat food that may have come in contact with the water.

Once your property has been flooded mold can develop in less than 24-48 hours, so it is important that you immediately get rid of wet contents in the house such as carpets, wet bedding, if the item has been wet for longer than 48hours you may want to get rid of it, if it has been less than that the item may be salvageable. It is recommended that you get rid of such items unless they are valuable in terms of money or sentiments.
